Valentine’s Day will be extra special in Carlisle today.

The city’s new register office officially opens in the marriage business with its first wedding taking place.

Registrars have moved from their old office near the city centre to Lady Gilford House at Petteril Bank, which is also home to the county’s archives centre.

Across the county, there will be seven weddings at register offices.

On top of that in Carlisle, there will be three in Whitehaven, two in Cockermouth and another in Barrow.

Meanwhile, venues in the marriage meccas of Gretna and Gretna Green will play host to 47 couples tying the knot.

The total number of ceremonies is a rise of 17 on the numbers there on February 14 last year.

February is expected to be an even more romantic month than normal this year, with 2012 also being a leap year when women traditionally turn the tables and pop the question to their men on February 29.
